How to write a goodwill letter to remove a late payment

A polite request, not a dispute — and when it's worth sending.

Direct answer

A goodwill letter asks a creditor to remove an accurate late payment as a courtesy. Creditors aren't required to agree, but it can work for an isolated late payment on an account otherwise in good standing. Be honest, brief and respectful, and say what changed.

Goodwill vs. dispute

A dispute challenges inaccurate information. A goodwill letter acknowledges that the late payment is accurate and asks the creditor to remove it anyway. They're different tools; use a dispute when something is wrong, goodwill when it's right but you have a strong case.

When it tends to work best

  • A single late payment, not a pattern.
  • An otherwise clean history with that creditor.
  • A specific, honest reason, such as illness, a bank error or a one-time disruption.
  • Your account is now current or paid.

What to include

  • Your name, address and account number.
  • The month of the late payment.
  • A short, honest explanation and what you've done since.
  • A polite request to consider removing the late mark.
  • A thank-you.

What not to do

  • Don't make excuses you can't support or claim the payment wasn't late if it was.
  • Don't threaten or demand.
  • Don't send it to the credit bureaus; send it to the creditor.

Set expectations

Many creditors decline, and some policies don't allow changes to accurate reporting. There's no penalty for asking once. If it's declined, building on-time history is the fix that always works.
