Reality check
Can you remove accurate negative items from your credit report?
The honest answer, and what actually helps.
Direct answer
Generally no. Accurate, verifiable negative information can stay on your credit report for the legal reporting period. Disputes work when an item is inaccurate, incomplete, or can't be verified. Anyone who promises to remove accurate negatives is making a claim federal law restricts.
What disputes can do
- Correct inaccurate balances, statuses, dates or personal information.
- Remove items that aren't yours, including those caused by identity theft.
- Remove items the furnisher can't verify within the investigation period.
- Delete duplicates and obsolete items past their reporting period.
What disputes can't do
- Erase an accurate late payment, collection or charge-off.
- Guarantee a score increase.
- Force a bureau to ignore verified information.
Options for accurate items
You can build positive history alongside them, negotiate payoffs, ask creditors for goodwill adjustments on isolated late payments, and let older items age out. Their impact on scores usually fades over time.
Red flags
Be cautious of anyone who promises removal of accurate items, tells you to dispute everything regardless of accuracy, or asks for payment before doing any work. Disputing information you know to be accurate can also backfire.
